How to control Claude API billing with spend limits

Claude API billing runs on prepaid credits for most organizations. Every organization on the Start, Build or Scale tier also has a monthly spend cap set by its tier. You can set your own lower limit for the whole organization, and a separate limit for each workspace. See all 9 providers.
Official docs: Rate limits and spend limits and Workspaces
Tier caps you already have
Anthropic lists these monthly spend caps by tier: Start $500, Build $1,000, Scale $200,000. Custom tier organizations have no monthly spend cap. When you reach your tier's cap, API usage pauses until 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next month unless you get a higher limit.
Set your own organization limit
Set a limit for one workspace
Workspace limits can be lower than, but not higher than, your organization's limits. You cannot set a spend limit on the Default Workspace, so put risky keys in their own workspace.
What the cap does
- When usage reaches a limit you set, requests return HTTP 400 with error type
invalid_request_error. The message begins "You have reached your specified API usage limits" (or the workspace version) and says when access resumes. - When you hit your tier cap instead, requests return HTTP 429 with
error_codeenforced_spend_limit_reachedand no retry-after header, so automatic retries keep failing. - Raise or remove the limit to restore access sooner.
What it does not do
- Limits on the Claude Code workspace are checked separately, and requests over that limit "can instead receive a 429 that carries a retry-after header."
- The Default Workspace can't have its own spend limit.
- The docs do not describe a way to send spend alerts to a custom email address or a webhook.
Prepaid credits and auto-reload
Anthropic says "Claude API and playground usage is billed through prepaid usage credits." Purchased credits also cover Claude Code. "If you run out of credits, you can no longer call the API or use the playground until you add more."
Auto-reload "purchases additional credits automatically when your balance falls below a threshold you set." To check it:
Credits "expire one year from the purchase date", and "All credit purchases are non-refundable."

Where CapBrake helps
Anthropic already has a cap you can turn on, so the job is to make sure it is on. Use the free CapBrake checklist to tick off each step above. Your progress is saved in your browser. No account and no API key.
