Can you set a hard spending cap on Cloudflare? What works today

Short answer: not yet. Cloudflare's budget alerts "are informational only. They do not pause or cap usage." In an update post, Cloudflare said "We're prototyping hard spending caps now, with early availability in Q4 2026." (Cloudflare blog)
Until a cap ships, these are the tools you have. Hosting on Vercel or Netlify too? Vercel and Netlify. See all 9 providers.
1. Create a budget alert
Official doc: Budget alerts
Budget alerts are for Pay-as-you-go accounts only. Enterprise contract accounts are not supported.
How it works: the alert checks your cumulative usage-based spend for the current billing period. When spend crosses the threshold, Cloudflare sends one email to all recipients. The alert resets each billing period.
Cloudflare says budget alerts are "informational only" and "Your monthly invoice remains the authoritative source for billing." You can see existing alerts under Manage Account > Billing > Billable Usage, then Budget alerts.
For alerts on one product (for example Workers requests), use per-product usage notifications under Notifications. Cloudflare webhooks for notifications "are available on all plans." (Configure webhooks)
2. Limit Worker CPU time
Official doc: Workers limits
On Workers Paid, CPU time per HTTP request defaults to 30 seconds and can go up to 5 minutes. You set the limit with limits.cpu_ms in your Wrangler config, or in the dashboard under Workers & Pages > your Worker > Settings. This caps how long a single invocation can run. It does not cap your monthly bill.
What you can't do yet
- Pause usage automatically at a dollar amount.
- Use budget alerts on Enterprise contract accounts.
Where CapBrake helps
Cloudflare does not give you one hard cap on your whole bill, so alerts still matter. Use the free CapBrake checklist to tick off each step above. Your progress is saved in your browser. No account and no credentials.
CapBrake also has an alert relay for providers like Cloudflare. It is free in early access. You put a private relay address on your budget alerts, and CapBrake sends each alert to your browser or Slack. CapBrake will never ask for your Cloudflare credentials.
